Reasons Why It’s Taking You Longer To Heal

There are numerous reasons why someone may heal at a faster rate than others. Patients that may have a tendency to take longer to heal from an acute back injury oftentimes have one or more contributing factors:
-People over the age of 50
-Has a history of motor vehicle collision
-Has a history of back pain or back injury
-Has a history of spinal surgery
-Has a history of diabetes
-Has a history of hypertension
-Has a history of mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety and/or depression)
-Current history or recent history of tobacco use
-Sedentary lifestyle (e.g., you do not exercise or perform regular physical activity, daily)
-Overweight or obese
In addition to the above health contributing factors, the condition(s) itself can posses a risk to the rate of healing and recovery from a recent acute back injury, including, but not limited to:
-Chronicity of condition (e.g., old injuries tend to take longer to get better)
-History of re-injury (e.g., had the same/similar type of injury in the past)
-Severity of injury (e.g., was the initial injury bad enough to seek medical attention?)
-Prior treatment interventions (e.g., what did you do in the past? What helped? What did not help?)
When treating musculoskeletal conditions such as the neck, back, and other joint pain, one must take into consideration all factors that may hinder patient progress. In reality, every patient is different and unique; therefore, a patient-centered healthcare approach is the best approach to ensure better patient outcomes, improvement in functional health, and patient satisfaction.
