Are You a Stomach Sleeper with Back Pain? Do This To Get Better Sleep

Do you experience more back pain in the evening? Can’t find a comfortable sleeping position because of lower back pain? Alghtout some people find sleeping on the stomach a comfortable position, however, if you are experiencing lower back pain, sleeping on your stomach can cause more pain, especially in the morning. If you must sleep on your stomach, use 2 pillows to get better sleep.

1st Pillow Placement

The first pillow should be placed underneath your pelvis just below the abdomen. The pillow should be long and wide enough to go from hip to hip and from below the pelvis to the top or mid-thigh region. When a pillow is placed in this position, it minimizes the natural curve of the spine, causing the lumbar spine (lower back region) to be flatter rather than overextending the lower back, which can cause more pain.

2nd Pillow Placement

The second pillow should be placed underneath the ankles. The pillow should prop the ankle/foot region enough to cause a slight or moderate bend in the knees. Placing a pillow in this position can reduce the unnecessary strain placed on the hamstrings (which connect to the pelvic bone), by flexing them gently. It is known that tight hamstrings can be a contributing factor to pelvis and/or lower back pain.

Of course, if you are experiencing neck pain or mid-back pain, again, sleeping on your stomach may not be the ideal position. However, every individual’s body is different; therefore, finding a sleeping position that is most comfortable to you and that allows you to get a sufficient amount of sleep with less pain, is the goal.
