Do You Want to Feel More Relaxed? Use Heat!

The easiest way to promote muscle relaxation, and reduce muscle spasms and tightness, is through the application of heat. The increase in body temperature from heat therapy (e.g., heating pad) results in an increase in blood flow to the area. Click here to learn how heat therapy can improve recovery from an injury by improving blood circulation.

Dilation of the blood vessels results in an increase in blood flow and circulation to the area. The blood contains all of the healing properties and substances that aid in tissue healing in repair. Included in the blood are vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that play an important role in muscle contraction.

Here’s Why an Increase in Blood Circulation Generates Muscle Relaxation

Oxygen

The arteries carry rich-oxygenated blood to the tissues of the body. When there is an increase in blood flow, there is an increase in oxygen made available to tissues, which allows the muscles to contract and relax more easily. When there is a decrease in blood flow to the area, there is a decrease in oxygen being delivered to the muscle tissues, which can result in muscle spasms, muscle cramps, and muscle tightness. Oxygen is essential to all living forms of life; without oxygen, the body is not able to sustain or thrive.

Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium

Calcium, potassium, and magnesium all play a key role in muscle function including muscle contraction and relaxation. When there is a decrease in these 3 electrolytes it results in muscle spasms and muscle contraction. If there is a severe deficiency of these electrolytes it can lead to prolonged muscle spasms, and eventually muscle weakness. Therefore, maintaining normal blood levels of calcium, potassium, and magnesium is essential.

Bottom Line: Heat can be an effective therapeutic tool to not only promote muscle relaxation; it can also promote tissue healing and repair. Be sure to take necessary precautionary actions when using heat, especially if you have sensory deficits (e.g., you can’t distinguish if something is too hot/too cold). Never use heat over an infection, open wound, or cut.
