I’m Too Young for Back Pain, I Need Relief Now!

No, you’re never too young to experience back pain. Many people think that back pain only affects older adults. Anyone, at any age, at any point in time can develop back pain. Although back pain appears to be more common in adults, teenagers often suffer from back at a similar rate as adults, especially if they are active, play sports, or participate in other physical activities.

Back Pain in Younger People Compared to Adults

Younger people who do experience back pain tend to heal faster. What can I say, they have youth on their sides. As our bodies age, our muscles become weaker and smaller; our ligaments become shortened and tightened, resulting in decreased range of motion and less strength. Now, this aging process can be combatted by having a regular physical activity routine that consists of strengthening, stretching, and aerobic activity (e.g., walking, running, jogging, swimming, dancing, cycling, etc.)

Younger people are generally more active than adults. The younger a person is the more active they usually are. Younger people are more likely to engage in social activities such as hanging out with friends, partying, etc. all require a certain level of physical fitness. Our bodies were designed to move. The more we move, the better we tend to feel. On the other hand, older adults tend to do the opposite, especially when they retire. They are less social, more sedentary, and less motivated or inclined to participate in physical activity because they think and believe “I am too old to do that.”

Younger people are more open to trying other treatment options. As we get older, we tend to become stuck in our way. Research shows that as we get older, we are less likely to try new things. Unfortunately, not being open and willing to try new things, especially new health practices, can lead to a low quality of life. Younger people are more likely to try chiropractic care, yoga, acupuncture, and other forms of healthcare to alleviate their symptoms, pain, or health problems.

Back pain in children and teenagers should be taken seriously, especially if the back pain is accompanied by a fever or stiff neck.
